Chapter Ten

We sing in a massive, extraordinary choir.

Our task is to find and hold our own note.

Not the note of our neighbor, or even what our neighbor believes our note should be.

Our own note.

Nothing more.

Nothing less.

Collected Proverbs, Beatrice of Fourth

Duncan knew Rachel had arrived back at Rex’s HQ not because he saw her but because he smelled her rich garden scent. He’d only been separated from her for a couple of hours, but it felt like days.

His soul, where they were joined, still pulsed painfully.

He didn’t dare glance at her, for fear he’d run in her direction, grab her and never let her go. But in his gut, he knew it was the last thing she needed.

Megan … yes, his mother … had helped him to understand what Rachel was going through. She knew exactly what it had been like to care for a child in an impossible situation. Megan had stressed the importance of giving Rachel space. Only Rachel could decide her best course.

Then the vision had hit, broken up of course by Zander in the future streams. But he’d witnessed the last part, about which he’d said nothing to any of the team, not even Luken. The details were clear and tonight it looked like he would die.

He still felt shell-shocked by what he’d witnessed, yet every instinct he possessed demanded he remain silent. He couldn’t have the squad jeopardized by fears that death was coming for him. Besides, he had no real details, only that he’d seen his lifeless body prone on the beach.

His chest went ice cold as this part of the vision crept through his mind once more. He saw himself lying in the sand not far from the water’s edge in San Clemente Three. The night sky was dark overhead. Rachel knelt beside him calling to him aloud and telepathically and the whole time he was slipping past the veil.

He wasn’t sure his life could get more complicated than it was in this moment.

If something didn’t change tonight, he would die.

Worse, he had a powerful premonition that the only way to prevent his death was to bond with Rachel. But that seemed about as likely as Chustaffus suddenly deciding to abolish slavery.

He only half-listened to Luken who was giving some kind of speech about the team really needing to pull together.

That Rachel’s condition was now well known was evident in how each member, at different times, turned to look at her, then at her stomach. Endelle had been the messenger. Apparently, she’d arrived before either himself or Rachel and let the team know what was what.

Luken appeared distressed beyond words, his mouth grim, his brow in tight furrows. For a big man, he was a sensitive type. He would never want to put an expecting mother in harm’s way.

He stood beside Rex in front of the main bank of monitors in the large central room of Paradise Three HQ. Rex looked composed except for the darting glance of his eyes and an increased tension around his mouth.
